words sometimes can’t describe puppies

11 February 2011

How many words are there in English? How many words does our great dane puppy Luna actually understand, now that she has celebrated her 3-month birthday? I know the answer to the latter. It is very, very few.

For the answer to the first question, I turned to the Oxford University Press. According to this hallowed language reference service, “the Second Edition of the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use, and 47,156 obsolete words.”

Sometimes a quarter million words, obsolete or not, aren’t enough to describe what puppies are like and what they do and the sounds they make. For that you need YouTube.

Here are two clips from recent weeks:

Puppies and Balls

Luna, our then 9-week-old great dane puppy, playing in her garden and unable to decide which ball to play with.

Sneezing, Groaning, Stretching Great Dane Puppy

Luna as a now 11-week-old great dane puppy sneezing and groaning and stretching.

Is there a prize if she selects the correct ball, or is this a test of colour acuity? You must be feeding her the right stuff as she is growing like a weed
